Advantages and Disadvantages of Canon Pixma MX870 (Review)

Canon Pixma MX870

Canon PIXMA MX870 Office All-in-One (AIO) merges the classic Pixma design with a more professional look thanks to a semi-glossy dark gray (silver) and matte black casing with a small Canon logo on the front panel and a small Pixma logo on the top panel.

The control panel runs across the front of the MX870 with the 2.5 inch LCD and Easy Scroll Wheel in the center. There are several quick keys for easy faxing, copying or scanning or users can manage the details of each device by selecting the fax, copy, scan or card main menu. Along with the quick keys, there is a numerical key pad, a power button, and a setup button.

The MX870 automatically folds out the output tray before printing (in case you are as forgetful as I am) but you’ll also need it open to access the ink cartridges.

The built-in card reader and PictBridge port are found to the right of the front panel output tray. Pull open the small door to reveal slots compatible with Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo cards, among others. Below that you’ll find the PictBridge slot that is also compatible with USB flash drives.

Canon Pixma MX870 Specs:
4-in-1 device: print, scan, copy, Super G3 fax
Print speeds: up to 9.4 ipm in black
Print resolution: up to 9600 x 2400 dpi
2.5 inch LCD with Canon Easy Scroll Wheel
Built-in duplexing
35-sheet ADF
Two way paper feeding: 150-sheet cassette, 150-sheet rear tray
Built-in card reader with PictBridge/USB connectivity
Five individual ink cartridges
Connections: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Hi-Speed USB 2.0
Energy Star qualified, RoHS compliant

Advantages:
Quality prints
MP Navigator scan software
Useful office features

Disadvantages:
Processing slowed down print speeds
Uneven single document scans

However, in a small business, small workgroup in a larger office, or a home office, I think the MX870 could really shine; it’s reasonably quiet and the initial cost (in comparison to a multifunction color laser printer) would save hundreds of dollars. Yes, the ink can be pricey but the Canon PGI and CLI cartridges used in the Pixma line have consistently printed more pages than the cheaper cartridges offered by competitors.
